Objectives

This course unit aims to understand the importance of organizations, learn the principal theories of the Sociology of Organizations, and the different organizational models, combining theoretical foundations with their application to specific cases involving organizations.

Learning outcomes and competences

After completing this course, students should:

1. Understand the different organizational functions and how they can be integrated in the firm's strategy.
2. Be able to apply management concepts, methods and tools.
3. Be able to apply management methods and tools to analyze companies’ management.

4. Be able to apply the management concepts methods and tools to case discussion.
5. Be able to work in teams.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes will be based on the presentation of the themes of the course unit. Practical classes will be based on the discussion of cases.The classes will focus on the practical application of theoretical concepts in the analysis and discussion of case studies as well as the discussion of papers.

Eligibility for exams

This group assignment will have two evaluation moments:
(i).Oral presentation and final report (35% of final grade)

(ii) Participation in classes and oral cases discussion (5% of final grade)

Calculation formula of final grade

Final grade = 0,35* (final presentation and report of group assignment)+ 0,05* (participation in classes and oral cases discussion)+0,6* exam

 

Minimum classification of 37,5% in each of the evaluation components.

 

Examinations or Special Assignments

Working students who cannot attend all classes can fulfill the distributed component of the evaluation through the following procedures:
1.Individual assignment defined by Professor
2. Oral evaluation
3. Written exam

final grade = 0,4* (report and oral presentation of the assignment)+ 0,6* exam

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Working students who cannot attend all classes can fulfill the distributed component of the evaluation through the following procedures:
1.Individual assignment defined by Professors
2. Intermediary and final presentation of individual assignment on predfined dates.
3. The two presentations are mandatory.
4. Working students should contact the course professors to define the work assigment

Classification improvement

The classificatio improvement of the exam follows FEUP'S regulations.
The classification improvement of the distributed component can be done at the same time as the practical assignments in the following academic year.
