The Advanced Production and Intelligent Systems (ARISE) Associated Laboratory (AL) is an association of five R&D Units established in 2021, interfacing public entities of 3 Universities - Coimbra, Minho and Porto, through the R&D Units CEMMPRE, ISR-C, ISISE, SYSTEC - and one Higher Education institution - Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, through CDRSP.

The ARISE AL brings together around 240 integrated PhD researchers articulating fundamental and applied sciences and technologies from Computation, Material, Management and Information Technologies Sciences, with key very diverse branches of Engineering - Civil, Electrical and Computing, Biomedical and Mechanical - yielding in this way a proper synergistic context and unique position to contribute to:
1) training and promotion of highly qualified scientific employment and attract international talent to Portugal, while
2) responding to key national and international public policies addressing social, environment, and economic challenges for which Production Technologies for Process and Product industries, Manufacturing, Built Environment and Habitat, Materials and Components, Information and Communication Systems, Energy and Mobility, as well as Economy of the Sea, Health, Agriculture, and Forestry, play a key role with emphasis on the comprehensive Reindustrialization and Decarbonization of the National Economy.
To efficiently pursue the above objectives, the ARISE AL is organized in the following five intertwined thematic lines:

* TL2 - Advanced Productions Systems and Processes
This Thematic Line addresses the design and development of systems targeting paradigm shifts driven by resilience, and the dual climate and digital transitions: datafication, robotization, decarbonization, circularization, and agility and responsiveness.

* TL3 - Sustainable Energy Systems
This Thematic Line focuses on the acceleration of energy transition towards renewable based systems, by integrating new energy efficient supply and demand technologies.
Development vectors: | Renewable Production - Smart energy management systems and new generation infrastructures enabling power transmission and distribution networks allowing high grid penetration | Energy-Efficiency in Industry and Buildings - Decarbonization implies a major electrification of some major end-users (near-zero buildings, industry, etc) | Storage Systems - Solutions satisfying increasing requirements of storage, including based on H2 | Electric Mobility - Electric Mobility Charging Infrastructure, and Powertrain Technologies.
* TL4 - Intelligent Systems and Robotics
This Thematic Line addresses fundamental and applied R&D to foster the embedding of intelligence in Cyber-Physical architectures and Robotic systems.
Development vectors: Cyber-Physical Systems by networking physical and computation processes tailored to Production Processes and Built Environment | Robotics: autonomy, collaborative, situational awareness, human outreach extension | Control, Optimization and Estimation Architectures to handle computational complexity, constraints, information, and the distributed structures | Data Science/Machine Learning | Numerical Computation/Simulation
* TL5 - Digital Ecosystem, Sustainability, Risk and Management
This Thematic Line targets the integrated sustainable development and maintenance of infrastructures, facilities and cultural heritage relying on the current trends for a fully digital ecosystem targeting a robust and resilient society.
Development vectors: Sustainability, life-cycle and waste management | Smart Cities, Infrastructures and facilities | Cultural heritage | Risk assessment and management, resilience and robustness | Failure, Reliability, Maintenance and Resilience | Advanced logistics and management for a fully digital ecosystem
The ARISE AL is fully committed to supporting the UN Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), in form of R&D and public policies with strong collaboration with industries and international development organizations. In particular, the ARISE LA targets the following SDGs:
