Objectives, activities and expected/achieved results
Objetivos e Atividades There are two objectives: 1) the investigation of the emergence of primary and secondary instabilities in submerged planar jet flows of viscoelastic fluids, their growth rates and the mechanisms leading to the fully-developed turbulent flow regime, its characterization, and the investigation of the turbulent entrainment mechanism at the turbulent/non-turbulent interface and how these features are affected by flow parameters and fluid properties; (2) the development of new subgrid-scale closures for large eddy simulation of turbulent flows of FENE-P fluids.

Both objectives will require extensive DNS investigations of forced homogeneous isotropic turbulence and planar jet flows of FENE-P fluids to investigate the turbulent flow characteristics and their relation to fluid rheology, namely the effects of Reynolds number, Deborah number, solvent to total viscosity ratio and polymer dumbbell extensibility.
Resultados Esperados/Atingidos Caracterização do efeito das propriedades de fluidos viscoelásticos sobre a dinâmica de jatos planos turbulentos, caracterizando as instabilidades primárias e secundárias dos escoamentos, e o comportamento estatisticamente estacionário através dos perfis de velocidade e de tensões de Reynolds e tensões poliméricas, perfis do trabalho das forças poliméricas e das leis da espessura do jato e do decaimento da velocidade. Análise detalhada dos campos instantâneos para o desenvolvimento de fechos submalha para modelos tipo Simulação de Grandes Escalas das equações governativas do escoamento e das tensões poliméricas, combinando com o mesmo tipo de fechos baseado em turbulência homogénea e isotrópica.
