Dr Ana Margarida Bento is a postdoctoral researcher at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), leading BriSK – A Risk-based Methodology for Predicting Bridge Scour Risk in a Changing Climate, funded by the FCT Individual Scientific Employment Stimulus (6th edition). Her research integrates hydrological modeling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and climate projections to enhance infrastructure resilience.
Previously, she was a postdoctoral researcher in the POSEIDON project, serving as a task leader at CIIMAR and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). From 2022 to 2024, she coordinated the Offshore Structures & Foundations R&D unit and was a CIIMAR Scientific Committee member.
She hold a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from FEUP, completed under the FCT InfraRisk Doctoral Programme in collaboration with the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC). Her research focused on developing a semi-quantitative priority factor for bridge scour risk assessment, using experimental and numerical approaches. She also hold a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering (Hydraulics and Water Resources) from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), where her thesis at LNEC analyzed dam failures due to overtopping. During her studies, she completed an IAESTE internship in Brazil, contributing to irrigation dam construction.
Beyond research, she have lectured at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo and the Polytechnic Institute of Guarda (2023/24 and 2024/25) and co-supervised Bachelor’s and Master’s research projects. she has participated in national projects such as NUMPIERS, InfraCrit, and GIIP, collaborating with Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), EDP, and international institutions like Politecnico di Torino, Trinity College Dublin, and the Graduate University of Advanced Technology (Iran).
She is an active member of IAHR, PIANC, IABSE, APRH, RISCOS, EGU, and the Order of Engineers. Additionally, she serves on the Advisory Board of Water (MDPI), the AQUARIUS Expert Team, and the IAHR Europe Leadership Team. She is an Associate Editor for three scientific journals. Her work, bridging research and education, is reflected in 30 publications, a Scopus H-index of 8, and 160 citations (as of February 17, 2025).
