Apresentação Pessoal

PhD in Biomedical Engineering (equivalence from Minho Univ., 2008), PhD in Engineering (Dep. of Bioengineering & Robotics, Tohoku Univ., Japan, 2007), MSc-Eng (Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, Sheffield Univ., U.K., 2000) and Dipl. Eng. in Mechanical Engineering (Minho Univ., 1998).

Currently he is an Assistant Professor and Head of the Mechanical Technology Department, Institute Polytechnic of Bragança (IPB), and a researcher at the Transport Phenomena Research Center (CEFT), FEUP, Porto University. He lectures various Master courses in Biomedical Technology such as Cardiovascular Biomechanics and Micro/Nanotechnologies and Biomedical Applications. He also supervises several students in the field of Biomedical Engineering.

During his doctoral course at Tohoku University, Japan, he developed a biomedical microdevice suitable for a confocal micro-PIV/PTV system, using a clean room, class 1000, at Tohoku University. After that, he started studying several in vitro blood flow phenomena happening at a micro scale level. Recently, he is focusing his research on developing blood-on-a-chip devices in order to diagnose major risk diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer, by taking advantage of the unique hemodynamic phenomena happening at a micro-scale level. This research is conducted with the collaboration of the Global COE Program “Global Nano-Biomedical Engineering Education and Research Network Centre” (funded by the Japanese government) at Tohoku University, Japan and also of the FCT, Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation.
