Apresentação Pessoal

Luis Almeida received his PhD from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, in 1999. He has been actively engaged in many different facets of real-time teaching and research, including scheduling, networking, embedded systems, industrial systems, and robotics. Currently, he is full professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the University of Porto where he coordinates the Distributed and Real-Time Embedded Systems laboratory. He is also Director of the Doctoral Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering in the same institution. His current interests are in real-time communication protocols for embedded systems and wireless communication and middleware for teams of cooperative autonomous agents. He is a co-author of more than 300 refereed publications in international scientific conferences and journals (7 with awards), co-author of 4 patents and 10 book chapters, and Principal Investigator, local coordinator or participant in over 20 funded national and international research projects.

Since 2000 he has participated in over 100 Program Committees and over 50 Organizing Committees of events in Real-Time Systems (RTSS, ECRTS, RTAS, RTCSA, DATE, …), Embedded Systems (EMSOFT, ICESS, SAC, …) Industrial Systems (ETFA, WFCS, SIES, INDIN, …) and Robotics (ROBOCUP, ICARSC, …). In particular, he was General co-Chair of WFCS 2020, ETFA Track (co-)Chair in 2005, 2007, 2019 and 2020,  co-Chair of ICARSC 2015 and 2019, General co-Chair of CPS Week 2018, co-Chair of the RoboCup Symposium 2015, General Chair of RTSS 2012, Program Chair of RTSS 2011, DATE Topic Chair 2009-2011 and RTSS Student Competition Chair 2006-2009.

He was an integrated member and Vice-Director of CISTER - the Research Center for Embedded and Real-Time Computing between 2018 and 2025, integrated member of IT - Instituto de Telecomunicações between 2009 and 2017, having coordinated the Networked Systems Group of IT-Porto between 2015 and 2017, and integrated member of IEETA - Instituto de Engenharia Eletrónica e Telemática de Aveiro and coordinator of LSE - the Electronic Systems Lab between 2003 and 2009.

He was also Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Real-Time Systems in 2020-2021, Vice-Chair in 2018-2019, Past Chair in 2022-2023, and member of the Executive Committee in 2008-2012. He is the Chair of the EDAA SIG on Embedded Systems Design (EMSIG) since 2020 and Vice-Chair in 2012-2019. He was Trustee of the RoboCup Federation in 2008-2016, Vice-President in 2011-2013, President of the Fiscal Council of the Portuguese Robotics Society in 2015-2020, Vice-President of the Board in 2009-2010 and Secretary in 2007-2008.

Luis Almeida is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Real-Time Systems Journal, Springer, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Systems Architecture, Elsevier. He was founder and first President of the Alumni Association of the University of Aveiro, currently being honorary member. He was also founder of the first IEEE Student Branch in Portugal, in 1987, and founder of the first Robotics Student Competitions in Portugal in 1995.
