Alberto Sereno graduated in Chemical Engineering from University of Porto in 1971, becoming a teaching assistant at the Dept. of Chemical Engineering (DChEng). After two and half years of compulsory service in the Navy, returned to DChEng. In 1975 left for a six year period of work in the industry returning in 1981 to academia. Obtained a M.Sc. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, Conn., U.S.A. in 1982 and a Ph.D. degree from University of Porto in 1985, becoming Assistant Professor at the DChEng. and Associate Professor in 1993; in 1999 got the Agregado title. Retired since December 2008. Visiting Professor at Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Espanha, from 1987 to 1999. Member of the Borad and Executive Committee of Escola Superior de Biotecnologia, Portuguse Catholic University from 1996 to 1998. Coordinator of European Union's Programme ALBAN (2002 to 2010) and Director of ALBAN Office, in Porto. Visiting professor at Universidade de São Paulo, Faculty of Animal Science and Food Engineering (Pirassununga), Brasil, 2012 & 2014 and at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Dept. of Chemical and Food Engineering, Florianópolis, Brasil, 2012. Coordinator of Chemical Engineering College (1992-1998) and Vice-President of thye northern branch of of the Portuguese Engineers Association . Member of the Executive Committee (2008-2012) and Vice-President (2010 a 2012) of Santander Group of European Universities, Brussels. Portuguese representative in the Working Party on Drying of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering and permanent member of the International Advisory Panel of IDS-International Drying Symposium. He is an Auditor in National Defence (1995).
