Full Professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP).
Habilitation in Architecture, University of Porto (2014), Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, University of Porto (1991), Master in Structural Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (1985) and Graduated in Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (1977).
Professor at FAUP since 1986. Between 1978 and 1986, was assistant professor at the School of Fine Arts of Porto (Architecture department). His teaching activity has also been extended to other Public Institutions of Higher Education, namely, Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, School of Engineering of the University of Minho and School of Science and Technology of the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, through specific collaborations, mainly in the context of postgraduate courses.
Presently, it is vice-chairman of the Representatives Council and member of the Scientific Board of FAUP, exercising also, at the same institution, the functions of director of the Architecture and Urban Studies Center and, in the academic plan, director of the Architectural Heritage advanced studies course (third cycle of studies).
The research activity developed, at an early stage, was focused in the field of Computational Mechanics and, more specifically, in the study and development of numerical models for the nonlinear analysis of concrete structures.
Currently, the research interests fall, mainly, in the area of Conservation and Rehabilitation of Ancient Buildings, focusing, in particular, on the study of the structural and building system of Porto houses, built up between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, aiming the establishment of intervention methodologies for their rehabilitation, as well as in themes that are enrolled in the field of History of Construction.
