Master in Mechanical Engineering

The Integrated Master in Mechanical Engineering has been awarded the international EUR-ACE quality label. This certifies MIEM as a high-quality programme which meets the international standards for professional engineering education at the masters level. [+ info]

Areas CoveredMechanical engineers are professionals who can perform a vast range of activities, such as:

  • the development of mechanical and thermal equipments (motor and railway vehicles, machine tools, steel frameworks, boilers, heat exchangers, etc);
  • the production of energy (thermal energy, wind energy, new energies, climatisation, indoor air quality, etc.);
  • the planning and production management (logistics, transportation, industrial maintenance, human resources management, quality control, etc)
  • industrial automation (automation of production lines, robotics, control systems, etc)
  • the development and implementation of new materials (ceramics, composites, polymers, biomaterials, etc);
  • the design and development of new products (integrated design, ergonomics, sustainability, etc);
  • the maintenance management and automobile repair
  • the creation of new companies
  • the assessment of projects and consultancy

Mechanical Engineers should have strong knowledge in many areas such as Mathematics, Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Electricity, Automation, Mechanical and Manufacturing Technology, Materials and Processes Technology, Management.

Professional skills

Mechanical engineers are expected to:

  • use their technical competence and knowledge in order to solve a vast variety of issues, in an intelligent way;
  • Recognize the need of experimentation and being capable of projecting, performing and interpreting the results of an experimental program;
  • Communicate in a efficient way the content and significance of their work to a vast variety of audiences through several means of communication;
  • Take part in multidisciplinary teams with a high level of integrity and ethics;
  • Continue their training;

Connection to the social-economic world

There is a connection with several companies and associations (mainly in the North of Portugal- but also in the rest of the country as well as in the European Union). This connection is made by students’ projects in various areas of investigation at DEMEGI (Department of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management).
