Doctoral Program in Chemistry

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).

The Doctoral Program in Chemistry aims to offer its students an advanced training in the various areas of Chemistry, in multidisciplinary dialogue with related sciences, promoting excellence in scientific research in dominant and emerging themes, such as energy, health and well-being, the environment, sustainability and circular economy, and new advanced and functional materials. The program aims to contribute not only to advancing the limits of fundamental knowledge, but also to the search for Chemistry-based solutions for today's major societal challenges. It is also intended that part of the future PhDs in Chemistry will have professional success in the job market, outside the academic environment. Thus, the program also aims, throughout its entire training cycle, to promote the development of transversal and soft skills (for example, communication skills, professional ethics, critical thinking, spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship) in addition to the scientific and technical training. The Program therefore aims, as a whole, to create opportunities for a holistic and advanced training of the doctoral student.

Admissions Requirements

To access this study cycle, candidates must be:

  1. holders of a master's degree, or legal equivalent, in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Materials Science, Bioengineering, Environmental Engineering or similar areas;
  2. holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized by the respective scientific committee as attesting to the ability of the candidate to carry out this cycle of studies.

Candidates will have to present:

  1. a scientific research work plan;
  2. a declaration of acceptance from a supervisor/supervision team that complies with the provisions of article 10 of the General Regulations for Third Study Cycles of the University of Porto.

Selection and Ranking Criteria

The classification (0-20) and ranking will be carried out taking into account the following criteria and sub-criteria:

Academic curriculum (area of training and grades obtained) (50%)

  • Sub-criterion 1 (10%): scientific area of basic training
  • Subcriterion 2 (40%): weighted average of the bachelor’s and master's degree final grades, according to: 0.35 x bachelor's degree grade + 0.65 x master's degree grade

Scientific curriculum and professional experience (50%)

  • Subcriterion 1 (30%): articles indexed in WoS/Scopus (15%), oral communications at conferences (7.5%), poster communications at conferences (5%), other relevant scientific publications (2.5%), with the exception of 1st or 2nd cycle theses or final reports
  • Sub-criterion 2 (20%): participation in fundamental or applied research projects (10%) and relevant professional experience or training in the area of the study cycle or similar (10%).

Note: academic or scientific awards, duly attested, will have a minimum bonus of 1.0 value in the final classification.
