Applicants

The following may apply for a cycle of studies conferring a Doctoral degree:

a) Holders of a Master's degree or legal equivalent;
b) Holders of a Bachelor's degree with a relevant academic or scientific curriculum recognized by the Scientific Committee as attesting to their ability to attend this cycle of studies;
c) Those with an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognized by the Scientific Committee as attesting to their ability to attend this cycle of studies.

The Scientific Committee of each programme may determine what previous qualifications are to be considered, restricting or detailing the general requirements (please see information for each programme).

N.B.:

1 – The Numerus Clausus available are shown in the table above. The numerus clausus remaining from each phase will be added to the ones available in the next phase.
Other phases planned in calendar and for which there aren't vacancies initially planned, will be held only if there are vacancies left over from previous phases.

2 - Programmes whose applications are held in other institutions:

3 - For the Doctoral Programme in Transport Systems 6 numerus clusus for the MIT/Portugal Programme are added to the 12 at FEUP.

4 - To the above vacancies may add special vacancies to applicants under protocols (please see information for each programme).

Ranking Criteria

The ranking criteria are defined by programme (please see information for each programme).

N.B.:

1- In Phase 1, only applicants with application grades higher than 14 (out of 20)* will be ranked. They must also provide documentary evidence proving they have the qualifications necessary to apply.
 
2 – Candidates who have completed or are expected to complete the programme before the applications deadline*, will be accepted in subsequent phases. If they cannot obtain the Graduation Certificate, a Declaration of Honour stating they have completed the necessary qualifications required must be produced.
The registration will only be considered valid upon presentation of the Graduation Certificate.
  
* Except for programmes that establish other admission requirements.

 

Documents Required

  • ID document (ID Card / Citizen Card / Passport) (mandatory);
  • Graduation Certificate from a higher education programme (mandatory);
    - In the 2nd phase and subsequent phases of applications, if you have already graduated but are unable to produce the Graduation Certificate, then you must submit a written statement indicating the date you graduated and the final grade you are expected to achieve. You are still be required to provide the Graduation Certificate before enrollment;
    - For qualifications obtained abroad see note (1);
  • Certificate listing all the Higher Education courses completed, their duration (semester/year) and number of credit units/ECTS (required); If you cannot obtain a certificate containing this information, you should add a list of courses completed, providing the information requested (mandatory);
    - You are still be required to provide the Certificate before enrollment;
    - UP students are only required to scan and attach the “Percurso Académico” information;
    - For qualifications obtained abroad see note (1);
  • Curriculum vitae (mandatory);
  • Information regarding your Advisor (optional);
  • Letters of Recomendation (optional) (2);
  • Photo ("passport style" in color, preferably with a neutral background, 200 pixels tall by 140 pixels wide, JPG format, average quality or higher in the JPG compression algorithm) (optional).

(1) Notes for Applicants from foreign higher education:
For qualifications obtained abroad you will be required to produce an original document in either Portuguese, English, French or Spanish, duly signed and certified by the respective institution’s highest academic body.
If the document is not translated into one of the above mentioned languages then it must be authenticated by the official education authorities of the respective country and recognized by the Portuguese consular or diplomatic authorities. Alternatively, it must hold the Apostille of the Hague Convention. The same should happen with regard to translations of documents whose original language is not Spanish, French or English.

In addition to these, you may be required to produce other documents depending on the programme you are applying to (information available in the application process).

Candidates will only be allowed to enroll after producing all required documents.

 

Fees

The applicant is required to pay a 55 euro non-refundable fee.

N.B.:
- As soon as the application deadline has passed, all applicants whose fees have not been paid will be excluded.
- Applicants excluded or not placed (alternate) in a phase and wish to apply for another phase must submit a new application and pay the corresponding fees.

 

Procedures

Procedure for submission of application

  1. Choose the intended programme and access regime (Applications to Programmes).
  2. Select "Submit application". If you are already a student at FEUP you will have to validate using your student username and password. If not a student at FEUP you will be asked to complete an application form. The credentials (username and password) will be sent to the email address you specify on that form.
  3. Fill out the application form and attach the requested documents. Note: Fields in red are required.
  4. Submit the application. If an error is detected (eg. required fields left blank), the system sends an alert message.
    If the information is submitted successfully you should review all data entered and either confirm or edit the data.
  5. After confirming your submission you will receive information regarding the payment of the respective fees (NB: It may take a while to create ATM-references).
    Payment made from abroad should be done through bank transfer using the information contained in the attached document, expenditure on account of the payer.
    You must then send proof of transfer to acesso.ingresso@fe.up.pt. The following data must be present:
    - Name, address, country, tax identification number.
    Note: After the deadline for submitting applications has passed anyone whose tuition fees have not been paid will be excluded from the process.
  6. If you’ve encountered any problems while submitting your application you must report them to acesso.ingresso@fe.up.pt until the day after the submission deadline.

Procedure for consulting the status of your application

  1. Log in at the site using username and password that you used in your application;
  2. Click on your name;
  3. In the options that appear on the right side of page select "Applications”.

Procedure to request recognitions

  1. In the application form in the field "You want to make a request for recognitions", select "Yes" and submit.
  2. In the options on the right side of page in Reconhecimentos select "Criar/Editar" and insert the request.

Procedure for completion of the registration

This procedure will be available through a link on the homepage of FEUP in the early period of enrolment.
