Globally, the International Labor Organization estimates that there are over 30 millions of fishermen worldwide. This study aims to identify the causes that are the source of occurrence of non-fatal accidents involving maritime workers of artisanal fishing on the northern Portuguese coast, with a focus on fishermen registered in the Captaincy Port of Leixoes. Was used a inquiry that answers to the criteria set out in ESAW. The accidents occurred mainly with workers between 35 and 54 years old (53%) and less than 6 years of schooling (100%). The main causes of accidents were falls (40%), loss control of the fish (18%) and shrapnel coming from the rupture of equipments (16%). The sway of the boat and the fat accumulated in the pavement are the main causes of the accidents.
