Abstract (EN):
Due to the cultural and historical importance of architectural heritage, the preservation and conservation of ancient constructions is a major issue requiring strong links between the various professional teams involved. Within the framework of the cooperation protocol established between the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering of Porto University, several studies on the structural behaviour of classified monuments have been undertaken. The present paper therefore describes the work performed for the consolidation of three arches of the high choir zones in different churches of the North of Portugal. These arches present similar pathologies mainly due to their flatness in the central zone. Two of them, namely the churches of Ponte da Barca and of Pópulo in Braga, have been already consolidated according the proposals described in this work. The third case, located in the church of Terceiros in Braga, is currently under study involving numerical analysis and laboratory tests in a 1:2 scale model to be built following the construction techniques and materials as the original arch. Numerical model calibration and assessment of reinforcing techniques for this kind of arches are the basic aims of that detailed study.
