Abstract (EN):
Given their impact on public health and on the world's economy, prion diseases, particularly bovine spongiform encephalopathy and its human counterpart new variant Creutzfeld-Jakob disease, are a subject of main concern in the international community. Scientific interest in PD has been growing since Stanley B. Prusiner proved that transmission is mediated by a nucleic acid free pathogen which was named prion. As a result, lots of information are arising about prions' molecular composition, their process of replication and mechanism of infection, about their localisation, cellular traffic and functions and also about possible diagnostic and therapeutics strategies toward prion diseases. In this paper a review of essential information on PD, in particular BSE and vCJD, is presented.
