Introduction and training in bioinformatics tools focusing on the user's standpoint. Case-studies in the context of ongoing research projects.

Introduction to in silico analyses of genomes. General considerations about bioinformatics applications user-friendly.

From basic in silico resources to more advanced bioinformatics applications.  Data-mining, Blast on NCBI, Multiple sequence alingment (Clustal on EBI), ORF finding, DNA sequences analysis and editing (MEGA), phylogenetic analysis.

Comparative genomics platforms: EDGAR; MaGe; CoGE. Potential and limitations. Exercises.

Introduction to Geneious. Exercises.
Genome-analysis applied tools.

Mandatory literature

Albuquerque et al. ; DNA signature-based approaches for bacterial detection and identification, Elsevier, 2009

Teaching methods and learning activities

Presentation of Case studies in the context of ongoing research projects and practical training sessions in the computer lab.

Oral presentations and written reports. Final exam.
