Teaching language

Objectives

To introduce the basic concepts and results on Vector Spaces and extend the study of Calculus to multivariable Calculus.

Learning outcomes and competences

A student is expected to know the concepts and basic results covered in the course and to develop the ability to use them.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

It is assumed in this course that the student is familiar and is capable of using the basic notions of Linear Algebra and Calculus given in the previous course Matemática I.

Program

Planned program

1. Linear Algebra: real vector spaces R^n and applications to Analytic Geometry.

2. Parameterized curves in R^n.

3. Vector multivariable functions.

4. Real multivariable functions; function extrema; multivariable integrals.

Comments from the literature

A supporting text is available on the UC page on Moodle.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The content of the syllabus is presented at the lectures, and proposed exercises are solved by the students at the practical classes.
-------------------------------------

From March 16, as determined by the University of Porto, the face-to-face classes were suspended and the UC functions in a distance learning regime, through the Moodle platform.

Evaluation Type

Evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Exame 100,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 106,00
Frequência das aulas 56,00
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

Students are not required to attend classes.

Calculation formula of final grade

Course approval is obtained in the final exam, that consists of 2 parts.

The grade obtained by a student in a part of the exam at the first exam season may be used afterwords.

In the exam of a following exam season, students who have not yet obtained approval (and only these) may choose not to solve one part of the exam, that would then get the grade of the corresponding one in the first exam season.

The exams take place in person.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

In any special evaluation season, the written exam might be preceded by an eliminatory oral test to assess whether the student satisfies minimum requirements to tentatively pass the written exam.

Classification improvement

Students wishing to undertake a classification improvement must solve all parts of the exam.

Observations

It may be asked to any student to take an extra oral or written examination if any doubt concerning his/her performance occurs on certain assessment pieces.
