Objectives

Introduction and training in bioinformatics tools focusing on the user's standpoint. Case-studies in the context of ongoing research projects.

Learning outcomes and competences

Using diverse bioinformatics applications and resources in the context of specific problems. Training in data-mining, retriving of significant data from specific databases, integrating diverse bioinformatic tools in response to specific problems.

Program

From basic in silico resources to more advanced bioinformatics applications.  Data-mining, Blast on NCBI, Multiple sequence alingment (Clustal on EBI), ORF finding, DNA sequences analysis and editing (MEGA), phylogenetic analysis.
Genome-analysis applied tools. Proteomics. Postranslation protein analysis and molecular modelling.

Mandatory literature

Albuquerque et al. ; DNA signature-based approaches for bacterial detection and identification, Elsevier, 2009

Teaching methods and learning activities

Presentation of Case studies in the context of ongoing research projects and practical training sessions in the computer lab.
Oral presentations and written reports. Final exam.
