Objectives

To master the use of Y chromosome (non-recombining) genetic markers in the forensic context

Learning outcomes and competences

mastering the use of Y chromosome specific genetic markers in forensic context

Working method

Presencial

Program

Evolution of sex chromosomes: differentiation and structure of Y chromosome
Y chromosome specific region: comparison with other primates: structure and evolution.
Y chromosome specific markers: STRs e SNPs.
Transmission properties of Y chromosome.
Usefulness of Y chromosome specific markers in paternity investigation and forensic identification: examples and likelihood ratio (LR) calculations
Y-STR databases: haplotype frequencies, sufficiency and sample size, population substructure
Y-STRs mutations: polymorphisms vs. germinal mutations. Factors influencing Y-STRs mutation rate: number of repeats, type of mutation (gains and losses according to allele length), age.
Y chromosome genetic diversity in human populations: Y chromosome lineages phylogeny and worldwide distribution.
Male DNA of unknown provenance: ascertainment of population of origin through Y-STRs typing.
