Master in Applications in Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).
MeBiBiS aims at promoting problem-solving skills based on the applications of principles of Chemistry and Biology to the fields of Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology. There will be a strong investment in competences at the interface of science, technology and entrepreneurship, along with all relevant dimensions in ethics, as well as in personal and professional career development.

Students are expected to acquire/consolidate:
  • deeper concepts in Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology;
  • principles of Biology and Chemistry as applied to the development of novel added-value bioproducts;
  • knowledge on biosynthetic (living organisms) and synthetic (chemical processes) routes towards bioproducts;
  • advanced training in the analysis and structural characterization of bioproducts;
  • acquaintance with the [bio]ethical dimensions and European regulations in Biotechnology.

As such, MeBiBiS has been designed to provide practical and theoretical knowledge in the application of Chemistry and Biology Concepts to Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology. Altogether, students are expected to become highly competent in:
  • · explaining and describing fundamental processes in biotechnology and synthetic biology;
  • · integrating acquired knowledge in a global perspective of the applications of chemistry and biology in all fields of intervention of biotechnology;
  • · acquiring basic experimental skills in biotechnology and synthetic biology;
  • · efficiently participating in team work and networking, elaborating and presenting scientific communications adapted to specific audiences, and organizing tasks according to a work plan;
  • · acquiring adequate skills for correct collection and critical analysis of scientific data;
  • · gaining consciousness towards all ethical dimensions in biotechnology and synthetic biology;
  • · acknowledging the need to keep updated and get advanced training throughout their entire professional career.

Admissions Requirements

  • Possessing a B. Sc. degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry or related areas, in any case with a minimum training of 90 ECTS in Biology and/or Chemistry and/or Biochemistry;
  • Holding an Academic, Scientific or Professional Curriculum that the Scientific Committee of MeBiBiS considers as sound enough to demonstrate the applicant’s capability to successfully obtain a Master Degree in Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology. Applicants who do not hold a B. Sc. degree by the application deadline, but who are expected to complete such degree by the enrollment deadline, must demonstrate their academic curriculum and certificate of all approved courses, respective ECTS units, scientific area, and averaged classification.
Note: All candidates not able to demonstrate that they have completed an adequate B. Sc. degree by the enrollment deadline will be excluded.

Criteria for Selection and Ranking

Candidates will be ranked based on the following criteria and sub-criteria:
  • 1.1 – Academic curriculum (area of study and final graduation classification) - 80%:
    • 1.1.1 sub-criterion 1: area of study (25%);
    • 1.1.2 sub-criterion 2: adequacy of the degree and final graduation classification (55%) according to the official graduation certificate, multiplied by a factor between 0.5 and 1.0 of normalization of the degree’s adequacy; candidates whose graduation was obtained in a foreign university should present an official document that includes the comparability scale of the final graduation classification.
  • 1.2 – Scientific curriculum and professional experience - 20%:
    • 1.2.1 sub-criterion 1: scientific and/or technical publications and communications (5%), duly certified (DOI of publications, copies of the abstracts of the scientific communications or link to their official digital repository);
    • 1.2.2 sub-criterion 2: participation in research projects, internships in fields related to the scientific area of the study cycle, or previous professional experience considered as relevant (15%), duly substantiated by means of suitable certificates or other relevant documents.

Candidates not yet holding a degree and/or possessing an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum recognized by the competent Board as suitable to enroll in the study cycle will be ranked according to the above criteria and sub-criteria, where final graduation classification will be replaced by the weighted average of classifications obtained in courses completed until then.

Tie-breaking criterion: interview to the tying candidates by the Scientific Committee of the study cycle.
