Master in Image Design

General information

Official Code: 9406
Acronym: MDI
Description: Abstract

The Masters in Image Design (MDI) began in 2006 at FBAUP within the scope of postgraduate training in Design. It is a multidisciplinary course of teaching and research in the areas of visual information, illustration, new media, photography, cinema, documentary image, citizenship design and social development.

From theoretical and practical classes, students develop applied research projects focused on principles of social, cultural and historical valuation. This model has defined the course as a space for the transmission of knowledge built from the identification and response to problems that we perceive in our daily relationships, needs inscribed in local, regional and universal realities.

The analysis of these themes has strengthened the construction of visual communication objects that cross scientific interests with ethical and social visions, preparing students for their integration into active public life. In MDI, real opportunities are generated through the creation of projects that value social, economic and cultural development.

Certificates

  • Master in Image Design (120 ECTS credits)
  • Specialty in Image Design (60 ECTS credits)

Courses Units

Project

P101 - ECTS — Analyze the image beyond its representation;
— Investigate and validate the image as a contemporary unit of literacy;
— Recognize the importance of the image at an academic, cultural and professional level;
— Understand the relevance of visual narratives around contemporary projects;
— Understand the importance of preserving documents capable of providing us with a view of the world from an individual, local, regional and global standard;
— Knowing how to recognize a transmissible visual heritage of individual and collective memory;
— Working the image as a structuring entity of communication design and multiple branches of knowledge;
— Develop design projects supported by the use of image, crossing increasingly complex scientific areas.
— Produce prototypes, models and projects in the field of extended communication design, applied to the market and the respective needs of its audiences.

Digital Culture

MDICD - ECTS This course unit intends to map the current technocultural context and the ways how computational and digital systems have been transforming it. Starting from historical, technological and philosophical contexts on computational technologies and their impacts in arts, design, culture, and society, this course unit will offer analysis and reflection mechanisms for the development of their critique.

Visual Devices

MDIDV - ECTS

The main objective of the Subject of Visual Devices is to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge in which the image, fixed and in movement, assumes a decisive role for the development of research projects.

The discipline is divided between the exploration of technological support, inseparable from the capture of images, and research methods allied to the construction of a critical spirit through the analysis, understanding and discussion of examples in the context of the area of experimentation and reflection around specific projects. This approach is associated with an informed and integrative perspective on the relationship between visual devices and research and project practice.

History and Theory of Image

HTI104 - ECTS This UC intends to analyze and recover relevant historical principles around the History of Image, making this formation converge with the practice of image production in the contemporary context, namely for:

1. Analyze the space of representation and the meaning of essential projects in the history of images;

2. Understand the recontextualization and appropriation of images, in the field of visual arts and design, and analyze the way they enhance new readings;

3. Encourage knowledge and the recovery of visual practices that face their disappearance;

4. Interpret and relate images as a legitimate trace of a historical-social construction.

Interaction

MDII - ECTS

This course is dedicated to the study of user centred design in the computational systems and the respective design of the interaction.

Research and Project Methodologies (I)

DIMIII - ECTS

Photography and Film Practices

PFC01 - ECTS

The PF&C (Photography and Cinema Practices) course enables students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to:

— Conceptually develop a theme, exploring the specificity of the photographic and cinematographic medium;

— Understand the relevance of photography and cinema in contemporary culture, art and society.

— Rehearse multiple formats of presentation and layout of the photographic and cinematographic image: production, edition, exhibition, publication.

— Enhance the technical initiation of hybrid analog and digital processes in the context of image archives.

Project / Dissertation / Internship

MDIPDE - ECTS

— In depth research methodologies to equip students in critical thinking about visual nature of projects to be undertaken during the semester;
— Research and validation of the image as contemporary unit literaci;
— Develop scientific interests that intersect with research projects able to provide us with a view of the world from a single regional or global standard, location, bringing a transmissible heritage of individual and collective memory;
- Understanding of grammars related to the image in the contemporary context, both cultural as well as technological.

Research and Project Methodologies (II)

DIMIIII - ECTS
