Project

DGPEP - ECTS

To understand and act in the boundaries between the designer action and the editor action, in a personal project development context.

To think on project methodologies through their graphic aspects and in an edition context.

To master the analogic skills in order to produce visual communication artifacts and simoultaneously the digital applications in order to develop graphic projects. 

To set and draw strategies for action with the two aspects of the project.

To define research territories that allow to interpret the real through design, contributing to the designer's action reinforcement of the analitic capacity and the social responsability endorsed by the activity.

Contexts and Practices of Illustration

MCPI501 - ECTS

Context and Practices of Illustration intends to position itself as a place for conscious and practice of illustration, focused on its narrative approach. The main objectives of this curricular unity are:

1 - Study the different definitions of illustration and its action fields in contemporary editorial context.

2 - Consider the grammar for illustration that defines its multiple occurrences as a visual expression.

3 - Study its formal, conceptual and historical context searching for its differences and similarities.

4 - Feature different audiences in order to define the variety of public in illustration.

5 - To map the territories in which illustration takes action, from global to local communities.

6 - Find means of dissemination of contemporary illustration in Portugal.

7 - As a result, is expected the development and practice of visual speech based on own research and self-awareness.

Design Graphics and Infographics

DGI - ECTS

Understand Infographics as a vehicle of graphic information that represents quantitative and qualitative data.

Know and learn the visual grammar applied to infographics.

Explore and apply all of the visual grammar learned in the structuring and composing an infigraphic project.

Acknowledge, select and aplly the best visual representation mechanisms according to the content that is being treated.

Understand and transcribe to cohesive visual compositions content based in data of visual and non visual nature.

Advanced Studies in Editorial Design and Tipography

EADET - ECTS To acquire sustained and systemic conceptual, aesthetic, and technical skills, related with editorial design and typography.
Knowing how to operate with what determines the knowledge and good practice of classical culture within typography and editorial design.
Understanding and knowing how to apply the essential rules of typographic and editorial design which determine functionality, pragmatism and invisibility.
Developing and knowing how to use visual expression and rhetorics in editorial graphic design without losing the sense of program, aims and context.
Understanding that audiences/programs are constraints of media and graphic devices and, as such, of their own expression.
Understanding that personal training and the knowledge progression in the subject is made beyond practice, with study, almost always individualized.
Mastering practices and methods of analysis, study and criticism in different problems related with typography and editorial design.
Students should have consolidated the design culture within design, and be able to develop a critical approach to its practice.

Type Design

DGPEDT - ECTS The objective of the Type Design course is to conceive, design, and develop a functional digital typeface:

- To know and understand the history of Western writing - from the origin of symbolic writing, including calligraphic models and "hot" and "cold" type - and its relationship with today's digital typography;
- Understanding of the influence and expression of analog drawing tools: pen nibs, inks, position and stroke theory;
- Mastering the anatomy, terminology, and typographic classification;
- Mastery of design and digital production tools (using FontLab or similar font production software)
- Reflect on the principles of development of typography for editorial, its characteristics, and constraints;
-  Develop digital fonts.

Art Direction

MDA501 - ECTS

We aim to provide learners with experience of the practice of art direction as a discipline by which to manage material and human resources in the practice of communication design, with the emphasis being placed on the dematerialization of media and on the role played by art direction in new digital media.

Research and Project Methodologies (I)

DGPEMII - ECTS The ability to write clearly and effectively assumes an important role in the academic world. Today, it is no longer enough to write dissertations or theses to complete the study cycles. It is also required to do communications and to write academic texts ("papers") that can be published in magazines "peer review".
This class seeks to fulfill this necessity by focusing attention on four main areas of research and dissemination of scientific work: argument, approach, research topic and structure.

Research and Project Methodologies (II)

DGPEMIII - ECTS Assist students in completing, in quality and on time, the dissertation / report;
Critically monitor the development of work / study, regardless of the supervision of supervisors;
Assist in solving the methodological problems inherent in the process of each student, in the dimensions of study, writing and project practice;
Provide information and content related to the entire second year process: documents to be delivered, public proof and their evaluation.
