During the early hours on 5 March 1992, a fire broke out in the Building in Largo do Professor Abel Salazar, occupied by ICBAS. The underlying causes of the fire are unknown, but we do know that it began in the Grand Hall, on the 3rd floor of the south wing, which was totally destroyed.
The areas most damaged by the fire were on the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors of the south wing and central nave, after the roof collapsed. On the 5th floor, the electrical installation was beyond recovery.
The Administrative Services (Academic, Accounting, Personnel, Secretary’s Office, Council Hall) located on the west side of the south wing suffered major damage caused by the water used by the fire-fighters to extinguish the flames. These services were immediately transferred to other facilities of the Institute, but the attempt to preserve the documents that had come through unscathed was in vain. The mezzanine floor of the 2nd and 3rd floors were the most affected by the water - doors, windows, window frames all suffered irreversible damages. On the 4th floor, in the area reserved for the Students’ Association, the damages caused by the water were also extensive.
Similarly, the areas allocated to Reprography, Iconography (darkroom) and Molecular Genetics (Theory and Practice Room and Laboratory) were also destroyed by the water, as well as the areas on the east side, in the Chemistry Laboratory, which lost its access doors and windows, in the Biochemistry Laboratory, next to the Chemistry one, and in the laboratories of Physiology and Pharmacology.
