Architect, urban planner and university teacher



Manuel Pinheiro Fernandes Sá was born in Porto on 20 August 1943.

He majored in 1968 in Architecture at the Porto School of Fine Arts and in 1970 he specialized in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Manchester, in England.

He began teaching at the ESBAP in 1972 as Assistant Professor, and transferred later to the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, where he still teaches as Full Professor.

Alongside his academic career, he works as an architect and expert in upgrading urban and public spaces. He has produced projects for the governments of Guinea-Bissau and S. Tomé e Príncipe, and in the early 90s (1991-1993) prepared the urban project for Avenida da Liberdade and adjacent areas, in Lisbon, a project which was resumed later in 2003 and approved by the Lisbon City Council in 2006. The project was shown between September and October in that year at the Variedades Theatre, in Parque Mayer.

Hotel Pestana, PortoManuel Fernandes Sá has also signed the project for the Carlton Hotel (now Hotel Pestana Porto), at Praça da Ribeira, Porto, and is responsible for the urban plan of the Porto waterside area, between S. Francisco Church and the Port Pilots facilities, in Foz do Douro.

He was responsible for the technical coordination of the revision procedures of the Porto Master Plan, adviser to the urban Planning project of Santiago de Compostela (1988-1989), coordinator of the Center of Architecture and Urban Studies of FAUP. He has also collaborated with other higher education institutions, supervising a Masters dissertation on Project and Planning the Urban Environment, at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, defended in 2008.

Fernandes Sá received the national Architecture Award from the National Housing Institute in 1989-90.
