Born in Rio Tinto, Gondomar, on 6 September 1904, Olindo Casal Pelayo was the son of D. Vicente Pelayo and Maria da Conceição Casal, both teachers and founders of private schools in Gondomar and Vila do Conde. Like his mother, he initially took the Primary Education course at the Normal School of Porto, which he completed in 1922 with full marks, and integrated the editorial staff of the newspaper "O Porvir: órgão dos alunos da Escola Normal do Porto" [a students’ periodical].
He began his professional career as primary teacher at the Fornelo school, in Vila do Conde, and then decided to pursue university studies and enrolled in the 1st Faculty of Arts of Porto, graduating in Historical-Geographical Sciences with the final average mark of 17 out of 20, on 1 November 1927, presenting the thesis "A Nobreza em Portugal na Idade Média" [Nobility in Portugal in the Middle Ages].
To guarantee his professionalization in the official high school system, he attended the Normal High School of Coimbra and the pedagogic specialization practice at the José Falcão Central High School, between 1928 and 1930, and passed the State Exam for the 4th High School Group (History and Philosophy). From 1933 on, he gave up his career in primary education in favour of high school education, taught Philosophy at high schools in Santarém and Aveiro, and at Camões High School, in Lisbon.
In 1938, he was placed a the Sá de Miranda High School, in Braga, where he was appointed councillor of the City Hall until he took up office as effective teacher at the Alves Martins High School, in Viseu, three years later. In the meantime, he was appointed by the Ministry to undertake a service commission until October 1947, where he acted as Rector of the Gonçalo Velho High School, in Viana do Castelo.
Following the invitation to direct the Primary Education School of Braga, he returned to this city at the end of 1947 and was elected Regional Sub-Delegate of the Portuguese Youth Association – for the Braga area, a position he held until he retired, which occurred during the PREC period [a revolution period]. Until the mid-80s, he pursued an important literary career focused on Poetry, which earned him some recognition in the North cultural circles.
