He graduated in Mathematics and was awarded his doctorate degree by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, where he taught Mathematics, Mechanics, Drawing, Astronomy and Geodesy.
He studied Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.
He founded and directed the Astronomical Observatory, in Vila Nova de Gaia. He was a great promoter of the study of Astrophysics.
