Augusto Queirós 1892-1971 Mathematician and university teacher |
Augusto Hermenegildo Ribeiro Peixoto de Queirós, son of Joaquim Eleutério Ribeiro, from Casa de Vilar, parish of Santa Marinha de Lodares, Lousada, was born on 17 or 27 August 1892.
He graduated from high school at the age of 16 and in 1924 he completed his degree in Mathematics at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, with the final mark of 17 [on a scale of 0 to 20]. In 1920, he had been appointed 2nd Assistant of Mathematics (1st Group – Analysis and Geometry).
In 1929, he chaired the discipline of Descriptive Geometry and, shortly after, having sat the public exams and submitted the Dissertation entitled "Princípios de Axonometria" (Porto, 1931) [Principles of the Axonometric Perspective] he was appointed Assistant Professor of Analysis and Geometry.
In January 1933, he concluded the exams for the position of Full Professor of Mathematics at the FCUP, competing against Arnaldo Madureira e Sousa and Fernão Couceiro. He was approved unanimously in the voting on absolute merit. In terms of relative merit, he came 1st.
In 1943, the School Board of the Faculty of Sciences, in its session held on 1 July, awarded him the degree of Doctorate in Mathematical Sciences.
Between 1945 and 1957, he served as the head of the FCUP, appointed by Ordinance of 18 April 1945. At his request, he was dismissed from office by Ordinance of 20 March 1957, and left his post on 3 April that year.
Augusto Queirós held other position at the FCUP - he was Secretary and director of the Centre for Mathematical Studies.
Among other works, he published "Círculos que se perspectivam em círculos: a propósito de um ponto para interrogatório em acto de doutoramento", along with Jaime Rios de Sousa (Porto, 1944) and "Configurações planas" (Porto, 1971).
During the commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the Polytechnic Academy of Porto, in 1937, he held a conference on "O Infinito em Matemática" [The Infinite in Mathematics].
In the academic year 1961-1962, he chaired the discipline of Descriptive Geometry.
He reached the age limit on 27 August 1962. Retired since November 1962, he participated in the III Overseas Holiday Course. He died in 1971.
