Abílio Augusto da Silva Barreiro was born in 1878.

He was a high school teacher in Braga and in 1927 he competed for the position of Full Professor of the 4th Group (Chemistry) of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, presenting the Dissertation entitled "Speed constants in reactions". He was awarded the degree of doctor of Physics and Chemistry in a session of the School Board of the Faculty of Sciences held on 14 October of that year.

Abílio Barreiro participated actively in the opening of classes of the University of Porto in the academic years of 1931-1932 and 1953-1954. On 16 October 1931, he gave the keynote address entitled "Promoting Science: the resolution of metaphysical problems", published in 1933. Abílio Barreiro was a Full Professor of the 2nd Group (Chemistry) and reached the age limit on 19 December 1948. He maintained, however, a strong link to the Laboratory of Physics of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto.

He was the author of pedagogical and scientific works, such as "Introdução ao estudo da Química-física" (1944) [Introduction to the study of Chemistry and Physics], "No centenário natalício de Ferreira da Silva: lições da sua vida (1853-1953)" [On the centenary of the anniversary of F.S.: lessons of life] and "Caldas de S. Lourenço" (1950).

He was still young when he became the civil governor of Leiria - between 4 April 1914 and 29 January 1915.

He died in 1961.
