Abílio Augusto Botelho da Silva Aires, son of António Inácio Aires, was born in Vila Real.

He studied Mathematics at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, where he completed his studies with 16 marks for Descriptive Geometry and Stereotomy, 17 marks for Superior Algebra, Analytic Geometry and Spherical Trigonometry (in the academic year 1915-1916), 16 marks for Qualitative Analytic Chemistry and 17 marks for Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus and Variations (academic year 1916-1917).

He was hired for the position of 2nd Assistant of the 1st Group, 2nd Department of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto in the academic year 1918-1919. In 1920, he was appointed 2nd Assistant of the 2nd Group of the 1st Department and reappointed decree of 29 August 1925.
In 1928, he assumed the position of 2nd Assistant of Mechanics and Astronomy (2nd Group) by decree of 16 January. He was hired to teach Celestial Mechanics by ministerial order of 7 December.
In the following years, he was authorized to teach the chair of Calculation of Probabilities by order of 16 April 1929, and Celestial Mechanics, by order of 13 August. In the academic year 1930-1931, he was in charge of the chairs of Calculation of Probabilities and Celestial mechanics, by order of 4 November 1931, and was reappointed in the academic years of 1931-1932 and 1932-1933.
In 1933, and for a period of 3 years, he became 2nd Assistant of the 2nd Group of Sciences by order of the Rectory of the University of Porto dated 18 July, and was reappointed, following a competition for the position of the 2nd Group - Mechanics and Astronomy, of the 1st Department – Mathematical Sciences, by decree of 16 September.
In 1943, the School Board of the Faculty of Sciences, in a session held on 1 July, awarded him the degree of doctor of Mathematical Sciences.

In addition to teaching at the Faculty of Sciences, Abílio Aires was also appointed librarian, in 1934, reappointed in 1944 and reappointed consecutively in 1951, 1953, 1957 and 1959.
He was part of jury panels at the universities of Porto, Coimbra and Lisbon, at the Agronomy Institute and at the Technical University. His works are available in the Library of the Faculty of Sciences of the U.Porto.
Between 12 February and 12 March 1960, he was absent from work for health reasons, a decision made by the National Institute for Tuberculosis, and eventually died on 28 May the next year.
In 1962, the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto set up the award "Professor Abílio Aires", to be given each year to the best in "Calculation of Probabilities".
