Economist, politician, teacher and pedagogue



Maria Ilda da Costa Figueiredo was born in Troviscal, Oliveira do Bairro, on 30 October 1948, to a family of farmers.

She decided to study Economics from a very early age, but before taking this course, and at the suggestion of her parents, she trained to become a primary teacher. In the academic year 1967-1968, she enrolled in the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto.

She married on her 19th birthday and lived in Aveiro, from where she took the daily train into Porto. In her second year of marriage, she moved to Vila Nova de Gaia where she was able to combine the teaching activity with her studies, as a volunteer student.

In the course of her degree, she socialized with her colleagues at the "Café do Piolho", in Leões, and was encouraged by teachers such as Professor Jesus.

She completed the Economics course in 1973 and in the following year she joined the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP).

Livro Educar para a cidadania de Ilda FigueiredoShe also attended a Masters course in Administration and Planning in Education at the Portucalense University (1998), and in Specialized Higher Studies in School Administration, at the High School of Education in Porto.

As a member of PCP, she was part of the intellectual circle of the Governing Board and the Porto Regional Directorate, and is a member of the Central Committee since the 1990s.

Ilda Figueiredo was a Parliament member between 1979 and 1991, a councilor at the City Council of Gaia from 1983 to 1991, and a member of its Municipal Assembly. She was also a councilor of the the City Council of Porto from 1994 to 1999.

While working for the Gaia Council, and as the councilor responsible for the Environment Department, she was involved in the Biological Park project, intended for environmental education.

She taught in basic education schools for a year, was a teacher at Almeida Garrett Secondary School, in Vila Nova de Gaia, and at Jean Piaget Institute, and supervised training programmes on Pedagogical Organization and School Management.

She was part of the organizing commission responsible for preparing the set up of the National Association of Councils, worked as an economist at the Textile Union of Porto and at the Confederation of Workers’ Trade Unions of Porto/CGTP.

She is a member of the European Parliament since July 1999, as the Vice-President of the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left, Vice-President of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, is a member of the Committee for Equality and Women’s Rights, of the Delegation for Relations with Mercosur and of the Delegation to the Euro-Latin-American Parliamentary Assembly, and is also an alternate member of the Committee on Agricultural and Rural Development and of the Delegation to the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly.
