José Carlos dos Santos Carvalho Príncipe was born in Porto on 13 April 1950.

He studied Electrical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (1972), followed by a Masters Degree in the same area in 1974, and the PhD in 1979, both on a scholarship, at the Electrical Engineering, University of Florida, Gainesville.

Universidade da Florida, GainesvilleBetween 1974 and 1976, he held the position of Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Aveiro, later as Associate Professor, in 1980, and Tenured Professor, in 1985.

In the meantime, at the Electrical Engineering Department, University of Florida, he was Research Assistant of the EEG Laboratory (1976-1979), Post Graduate Fellow (1979-1980) and Visiting Professor of Electrical Engineering (1985-1986).

Logotipo da CNELIn the same American university, he worked as Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering (1987-1993) and later as Professor (1993). In 1991, he founded and directed the Computational NeuroEngineering Laboratory and is BellSouth Professor since 1995.

Although he lives in the USA, he has maintained strong connections with Porto and its university, since he coordinates the Scientific Advisory Board of INESC Porto (Institute of Systems and Computer Engineering of Porto) and is Full Guest Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.

He also co-founded NeuroDimension and is the Chairman of the International Neural Network Society, a member of IEEE and of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).

Logotipo da IEEEHis main areas of interest include the theories of adaptative systems, neuroengineering, non-linear dynamics and automatic learning.

His scientific career has been acknowledged in both Portugal and abroad over the years. He has received many awards and distinctions, among which the Innovation and Creativity Award of the Portuguese Industrial Association (1991), the Laurea Honoris Causa in Electrical Engineering, presented by Università Mediterrânea, and the "2007 IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Career Achievement Award", presented each year in the field of Biomedical Engineering Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), an institution founded in 1884 comprising 370 thousand members, making it the largest technical society of the world.

José Carlos Príncipe is considered one of the world leading figures in the field of Computational NeuroEngineering, is the author of five patents (and has seven others pending approval), has written seven books (four of which edited), 14 book chapters in scientific journals and over one hundred articles edited in journals. He has also participated in over two hundred conferences and been a member of jury for about fifty PhD exams and for over sixty Masters exams.

He is married and has two daughters.
