Adolfo Pinto Leite was born in Porto on 26 October 1942 to a large family – he had 11 brothers, some of them renowned doctors. His father, whom he was named after, Adolfo Pinto Leite, was a renowned radiologist, just like his grandfather, Adolfo Pinto Leite, the pioneer of Gastrointestinal Radiology in Portugal and former President of the Regional Council of the Medical Board.
Adolfo studied Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, having completed the course with the final mark of 16 out of 20.
After he completed his studies, he travelled to Paris where he worked as Foreign Assistant at the Hospitals of Paris and was awarded the diploma of Radiology Specialist from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Paris.
During the compulsory military service completed in Mozambique, he worked as a Radiologist in Lourenço Marques and Nampula, taught Radiology and ran the Radiology Service of the University Hospital.
Back in Portugal, he worked as a specialist doctor at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology for ten years, and in the next six years took up office as Professor of Radiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto.
Along with his brother Carlos, Adolfo Pinto Leite introduced the abdominal ultrasound in Radiology, and was the forerunner of the computed tomography technique, having led the group of doctors responsible for the first full body CAT scan.
His clinic, called Instituto de Radiologia Dr. Pinto Leite, is, since 1995, responsible for the Department of Radiology of Prelada Hospital. In 2008, Adolfo Pinto Leite assumed the management of the Radiology Service of Santa Maria Hospital and began to prepare the organization of the Radiology service of the future Boa Nova Private Hospital. To guarantee the permanent updating of the doctors working for him, he has signed agreements with the Hospitals of South Carolina (San Diego).
Adolfo Pinto Leite is a member of international Radiology societies.
Tennis is his favourite hobby. In fact, he won the Junior championships in the North of Portugal, and the 3rd place n the national ranking. In 1964, he represented Portugal at the Budapest University Championship.
