He attended primary and preparatory school in Chaves and continued his studies in Porto. At the Soares dos Reis School of Decorative Arts he studied Painting (1965-1967) and prepared for the Painting and Sculpture courses at the Porto School of Fine Arts (1967).
In the academic year 1967/1968, he enrolled in the Sculpture course at ESBAP and received a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

In 1969, he suspended his academic training as he was drafted to do his compulsory military service in Angola, returning to ESBAP in 1972 to complete the General Course (1974) and the Complementary Course in Sculpture (1975).
By then, he had also taken the course in Shoe Designing, at the Vocational Training Centre for the Shoe Industry, and the Dress Designer/Stylist course at the Instituto Técnico Internazionale Arte Calzaturiera "ARS´Utória" of Milan (1973). Later, he taught at secondary education schools (1974-1977).

Escultura O Modelo Feminino, Gesso, de Carlos Marques (1986)In 1976, he was requisitioned by ESBAP but was not authorized by the Ministry of Education to terminate his contract as a high school teacher. However, he managed to teach Introduction to Painting/Sculpture and support the subject Sculpture Workshop I, but with no salary.
In 1977 he was officially appointed Substitute Teacher and in 1979 he became Assistant.

In the 1980s, he won the Prémio Anual de Investigação – Escultura 83, [an annual prize for research in the field of Sculpture], in Lisbon, awarded by the National Academy of Fine Arts (1984), sat the exams for the position of Tenured Professor (1986) with the project entitled "O Modelo Feminino" [the female model], and became 1st Assistant. He was part of the School Governing Board (1987) and helped found ESAD – The School of Arts and Design of Matosinhos (1988).

In 1993 and 1994 he worked with Carlos Barreira and Zulmiro de Carvalho to form an experimental workshop, which was part of a strategy to renovate the teaching of Sculpture. In 1995, he rose to the position of Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto.

As a member of ESBAP/FBAUP, he participated in the assembly of school representatives and in the Governing Board, was a jury member in aggregation exams of other sculptors; he also evaluated the exams sat by Amaral da Cunha and co-supervised PhD theses. He took up functions as Associate Professor of Sculpture at FBAUP from 1999 on.

Fotografia do Monumento a Fialho de Almeida, em Cuba do Alentejo, de Carlos MarquesHe values drawings and produces a conceptual type of sculpture work, which reflects a profound interest in new materials and technologies, as well as the influence played by Brancusi. Some of his sculptures include "Engrenagem" (1974), "Fim de percurso" (1975), "O Ovo", the larger works "Forma e Poesia", in the gardens of Matosinhos City Hall (1986) and the monument "Monumento a Fialho de Almeida", in Cuba, Alentejo (1992-1993).
Since the 1970s, Carlos Marques has participated in about two hundred group exhibitions, in both Portugal and abroad. His first solo exhibition was in 1982, at the Engenheiro António de Almeida Foundation, in Porto.

He participated in the postcard collection entitled "10 Originais escultores portugueses", [10 original Portuguese sculptors], edited by Nova Renascença (1982), designed the float ("Os Portugueses e o Mundo") for the historical parade used in the 10 June 1985 celebrations and produced illustrations for a book on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, published by the Portuguese Department of AEDE and by the Engenheiro António de Almeida Foundation (Porto).

With regard to stage designing, Carlos Marques worked with R.T.P. [Portuguese Television Network] designing sets between 1978 and 1984, for example, in the television version of the novel by Aquilino Ribeiro "O Homem que matou o Diabo" (1979), in the TV programmes "A Árvore das Patacas" (1981) and "Adágio" (1984) and in the series "Fronteiras da Música" (1982). He also worked for Casino da Póvoa de Varzim, designing the sets for the opening show at the ball room (1984).

Carlos Marques has participated in various symposia and workshops on Sculpture and Art, in Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique and Cape Verde, and written texts for catalogues and magazines.

His work is shown in important museums such as the Contemporary Art Museum of the Serralves Foundation, Porto (1985), the British Museum, London (1986), the Municipal Museum Amadeo de Souza Cardoso, Amarante (1988), the Museum of the Engenheiro António de Almeida Foundation, Porto (2008), the Teixeira Lopes House-Museum in Vila Nova de Gaia (2008) and Douro Museum, in Peso da Régua (2008).
He is one of the founding members of Lugar do Desenho, at the Júlio Resende Foundation.
