José Maria dos Santos Pulido Valente was born in Lisbon on 27 July 1936.
He completed his secondary education in Lisbon at the Pedro Nunes High School (1946-1953).
When he moved to Porto, he enrolled in the Architecture higher education course at the Porto School of Fine Arts, in 1955, which he concluded in 1964 with a final mark of 19 out of 20. The title of his end of the course thesis was Moradia da Avenida de Fernão Magalhães, Porto – 1964 [a house in Fernão Magalhães Avenue].
He has worked as an architect in Porto since 1958. He is the author of several architecture projects for private houses, offices, tourist complexes and urban projects in cities such as Porto, Matosinhos, Viana do Castelo and Ovar.
He received a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and trained in Paris (Centre Scientifique et Technique du Batiment), in Hannover, in Berlin (Institut für Bauforschung), in Rotterdam (Bauzentrum) and in London (Building Centre).
José Pulido Valente was one of the founders of the Cooperativa de Actividades Artísticas Árvore, in 1962, and is a long-standing member of the Portuguese Society of Authors and the Portuguese Society of Acoustics.
He taught Architecture in three institutions: at ESBAP, in 1976, as Assistant Professor of Organization, Protection and Use of Spaces, in the 2nd group, and as Assistant Professor of Construction/Architecture, between 1977 and 1986; at the School of Architecture of Cooperativa Árvore; and at ESAP (Porto Higher Institute of Arts).
Between 1963 and 1975, he held the post of technical consultant at the Viana do Castelo City Hall.
He participated in numerous individual and collective exhibitions, seminars and congresses, and has collaborated in several newspapers. He is also the author of books such as "Acuso: Crónicas de arquitectura-urbanismo" (2001) [chronicles on architecture and town planning] and "A remar contra a maré" (2005) [Working against the Tide].
A diligent, pugnacious and controversial architect, he has never been afraid of facing politicians and fellow colleagues. He is known for his critical opinion on the construction of controversial buildings, such as the Coutinhos Building, in Viana do Castelo, or the Bom Sucesso Shopping, in Porto.
