José Júlio de Sousa Pinto 1856-1939 Painter

José Júlio de Sousa Pinto was born in Angra do Heroísmo, Ilha Terceira, Azores Islands, on 15 September 1856. He was the son of Dr. Lino António de Souza Pinto, from Valongo, and Ana de Sousa Loureiro.

In 1870, he enrolled in the Porto Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under João António Correia, Thaddeo d' Almeida Furtado and Soares dos Reis. In 1880, two years after he completed the Painting Course, he left for Paris as a State scholarship student, to study History Painting, together with Henrique Pousão.

During this period of additional training, he was also taught by masters Adolphe Yvon (1817-1893) and Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889), at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, and took part in the Parisian Salons, where he was awarded an Honourable Mention (1885), and later became part of the jury (1900).

Having completed his studies, he remained in France, but still travelled to Portugal for regular visits, to exhibit his work in collective and individual events, in Porto and in Lisbon, namely in the National Society for Fine Arts, in the Grémio Artístico, in the Promoting Society for Fine Arts, in the Porto Academy of Fine Arts, in Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Porto, in Ateneu Comercial do Porto and in the Silva Porto Hall.

Throughout his working life, he exhibited his work other than in France, with great success, particularly in Brazil and the United States. At the International Exhibition in Nice, in 1884, he was awarded a gold medal; at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, in 1889, he received a 2nd medal; at the Exhibition held in Rio de Janeiro, in 1895, he was awarded the Silver Medal; and in 1896, he received a Diploma at the Exhibition in Rennes, and the gold medal in Atlanta.

His work is shown in foreign museums (France, the United States, Brazil and Australia), and, in Portugal, in the Soares dos Reis National Museum and the Contemporary Art Museum in Serralves, Porto, in the Grão Vasco Museum, in Viseu, in the Teixeira Lopes Museum, in Vila Nova de Gaia and in the Chiado Museum, in Lisbon.

This landscape painter belongs to the first generation of naturalist painters. His son, Carlos, followed in his father’s footsteps as a plastic artist. José Júlio de Sousa Pinto died in Brittany (France) on 14 April 1939.
