Actress and Drama teacher

Maria Emília Cabral Silvestre was born in Porto on 29 May 1960.

As a child, she loved to play "theatre" at her grandmother's house, and often called her brothers to participate or simply to watch, and only had Drama lessons at a later stage. Her child dream was to be a nun, as she was absolutely fascinated by the nuns (clothing, rituals, poise and voice) that ran her school.

At the Carolina Michaelis High School, she was persuaded to take tests for an adaptation of "A Bela Adormecida" (Sleeping Beauty), staged by Correia Alves. She was chosen for lead actress, and her sponsor was convicted that she would be a future actress.

However, her most decisive experience in Drama happened in 1973, when she participated in the first show staged by Companhia Seiva Trupe, with a children's play entitled "Muscalim na Praça dos Brinquedos" (Muscalim at the Toys Square). A few years after this performance, Emília Silvestre joined the cast of the Teatro Experimental do Porto, where she remained until 1986.

In addition to working as dubbing director, she also participated in TV series such as "A Viúva do Enforcado", "Club Paraíso", "Os Andrades", "Ora Viva", "Elsa uma Mulher Assim", "Triângulo J" and in the play "O Motim". In cinema, she played a part in "Terra Fria", by Jorge Campos, and she has done several publicity spots and recorded theatre plays.

Emília Silvestre attended performance, voice and speech courses with famous professionals, for instance, M. Shelly and Lynn A., Roberto Merino, Polina Klimovetskaya, Julie-Wilson Dickson, Luís Madureira and Kuniaki Ida. In 1996, together with Jorge Pinto, she founded the Grupo Ensemble – Sociedade de Actores, a theatre company.

Simultaneously with her artistic activities, the actress, with a degree in Languages and Modern Literatures taken at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, also taught at the Academia Contemporânea do Espectáculo and the School of Music and Performing Arts, in Porto.

In 2001, she was honoured by the Porto City Hall with the Gold Cultural Merit Medal, and in 2007 she received the Special Honourable Mention Award from the Associação de Críticos de Teatro (Art Critics) for her artistic career.
