Having chosen a teaching career as his profession, he taught at the Lisbon Primary School and was then invited to work as a Contract Teacher of the 3rd Group (German Philology) at the First Faculty of Arts of the University. He took up office on 20 November 1921, two years after signing the contract he was appointed Ordinary Professor (24 November 1923), and then rose to the rank of Full Professor after the Reform in 1926. He remained in office until the closing of the Faculty at the end of the academic year 1930-1931. During this period, he was responsible for the chairs of German Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, Practical Course of German and Comparative Grammar of German Languages, and taught General History of Civilization, History of Portugal, Medieval History and Modern and Contemporary History, as the teaching staff members gradually left the Faculty.

By decision of the School Board of the First Faculty of Arts he was awarded the degree of Doctor in Letters – German Philology on 19 April 1926, having also assumed the administrative functions of Secretary (1926-1930), Librarian (1930-1931) and representative in the University Senate (1931).
