University Teacher and Philologist

Urbano Canuto Soares was born in Funchal on 19 January 1894, where he completed his high school education, and only later moved to the mainland to continue his academic training. He enrolled in Classical Philology at the Faculty of Arts of Lisbon, where he soon showed his natural flair for Philology and Latin through the works he published. He completed the Bachelors degree with the final mark of 16 out of 20 in the academic year 1916-1917.

After completing this course, he returned to his hometown and was commissioned by the Ministry of Public Education to research the life and work of Father Manuel Álvares.
In the summer of 1919, he was invited to teach at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, created in that same year. The invitation was made by Leonardo Coimbra, founder of the institution and, at the time, Minister of Public Education.

Until 1921, he worked as Contract Professor of the 1st Group (Classical Philology) later was re-appointed as Ordinary Professor, and then rose to the rank of Full Professor after the Reform in 1926. He remained at the Faculty of Arts until it closed in 1928.

Still in 1921, Urbano Canuto Soares was nominated by the University of Porto to deliver the welcome speech in Latin and to prepare the PhD diplomas to be awarded at the Honorary Doctor ceremony in honour of the Unknown Soldier to Marechal Joffre (representing France), to Generalíssimo Diaz (representing Italy) and to General Smith Dorrien, representing Great-Britain.

At the Faculty of Arts, where he held the chairs of Latin Language and Literature, Greek Language and Literature, Medieval and Barbarian Latin, Elementary Course in Greek, Comparative Grammar of Greek and Latin and Palaeography, the Board awarded him the degree of Doctor in Letters – Classical Philology, on 23 October 1926.

After interrupting his teaching career at the University of Porto, Canuto Soares was appointed for the position of attaché. He then taught at the Gil Vicente High School, in Lisbon, until he was invited by Professor Teodoro Ramos to join the Faculty of Philology, Sciences and Arts of the University of S. Paulo as Guest Professor. Here, he was a Full Professor of Latin between 1939 and 1954. His professional career after this period is unknown.
