Dario Alves

Dario Alves 1940- Painter and university teacher

Dario Alves was born in Torre de Moncorvo, on 16 December 1940, although he has lived in Porto since his childhood.

In 1959, he began to work in the field of Graphic Design, and until 1965 he worked for various graphic design companies (Estúdio Atenas, Tipografia Carvalhido and Simão Guimarães Filho Ld.ª) and was the publicity manager in Jornal de Notícias between 1978 and 1987.
At the Porto School of Fine Arts he attended the General and Complementary Painting Courses, which he completed in 1965 and 1973, respectively.

In the following years, he taught at the business and industrial schools of Ermesinde and Vila Nova de Gaia (1973/1976), was part of the Technical Council and Management of Cooperativa Árvore (1975/1977), and in 1976 he started his academic career at ESBAP (now Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto), where he taught, until 1999, the subjects Introduction to Plastic Arts/Design, Graphic Design, Specialized Graphisms and Painting.

Before and after 25 April 1974, he began to show his work in group exhibitions (in 1972) and solo exhibitions, in 1979. With painter Lima de Carvalho and sculptors Clara Menéres and Alfredo Queiroz Ribeiro, he participated in various activities of the Grupo ACRE and founded the Grupo Puzzle, along with artists Graça Morais, Albuquerque Mendes and Pedro Rocha (1976).

In the following decade, he received a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation which enabled him to visit the biennial exhibitions of Graphic Design in Poland, Italy and Czech Republic (1980/1986). He ran the EG Gallery (1984/1989) and consolidated his career at the ESBAP. Here, he chaired the Faculty Board (1984/1993 and 1996/2001) and gradually rose to the position of Assistant Professor (1983), of Tenured Professor (1996) and of Associate Professor, a position he held when he retired in 2001.

In 1998, he was part of the jury that chose the Portuguese side of the Euro coin, and of the technical board in charge of the aesthetic project of Ponte do Infante, later built on the Douro River, linking the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.

Among his varied artistic work, reference to the portraits of prominent Portuguese personalities, such as Mário Soares, the rectors Alberto Amaral and José Novais Barbosa, of the University of Porto, Lúcio Craveiro, Machado Santos and Licínio Chaínho, of the University of Minho, and the President of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, Luís Soares, painted between 1994 and 2006. He was also involved in the ceramic coating of the canteen of the Matosinhos Public Transport Services (1977), and produced serigraphies for ESBAP, for the firms Soares da Costa and Carlos Sousa Texteis, for Unibanco and S. Bento Galleries, in Lisbon. He made illustrations for Edições ASA and Lisboa Editora, posters for the Soares dos Reis National Museum, exhibition catalogues and the logotypes for the Engenheiro António de Almeida Foundation, União de Bancos Portugueses and Cimertex.

His art was shown in numerous exhibitions and is part of private collections, such as the collections in the Delegation of the Secretary of State for Culture (Porto), in the Rectorate of the University of Porto, in the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, University of Minho (Braga), in the Dr. Mário Soares Foundation (Lisbon), in the Porto Industrial Association (Porto), in the headquarters of Jornal de Notícias (Porto), in AXA Porto, in Algarve Hotel (Lagos), in the headquarters of the firm Mota e C.ª (Porto), in Fábrica de Chocolates Imperial (Vila do Conde) and in many banks, such as BCP and BPI. The collections can also be found in Portuguese and foreign museums: Museum of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, Contemporary Art Centre, Soares dos Reis Museum and Serralves Foundation, in Porto; Museum of Design, in Estremoz; Cupertino de Miranda Foundation, in Famalicão; Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon; Modern Art Museum of Lund, in Sweden).
