José Luís Machado do Vale was born in Braga, in 1955.
He enrolled at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto at the age of 18 to attend the Civil Engineering course (1973-1978), at the end of which he trained between October and December of that last year in the Geotechnical Services of LNEC (National Laboratory of Civil Engineering). After the traineeship, he was admitted to the general Directorate for Hydraulics, where he remained from 1979 to 1982.
In 1982, he entered into a new phase in his life. He began teaching the subjects of Hydrology, General Hydraulics and Hydraulic Equipment in the Civil Engineer course at the University of Coimbra (1982-1984) and to collaborate, from October on, with the company Tecnasol, as director of dam projects. In 1991, when Tecnasol was purchased by SOMAGUE, Machado do Vale was appointed company administrator.
Between 1997 and 2001, he attended the Advanced Management Programme for Executives (PAGE) at the Post-Graduate School of the Faculty of Economic and Entrepreneurial Sciences of the Portuguese Catholic University.
In Abril 2006, with the acquisition of the full capital share of Tecnasol by Edifer, he became chief executive officer of Tecnasol and Edifer Construções, a position he maintained until November 2007.
Since December 2007, he is the Chairman of the Boards of SOMAGUE Engenharia, SOMAGUE Ambiente, SOMAGUE Imobiliária and SOMAGUE SGPS, as well as Executive Director of SOMAGUE Itinere, which help support the activity of Grupo SyV in Portugal.
He is linked to several national and international organizations, such as the International Commission of Large Dams (a member of the Portuguese national committee), Sociedade Portuguesa de Geotecnia [Portuguese Geotechnics Society] (board member in the last quadrennial), and the Portuguese Commission of Tunnels.
As the representative of SOMAGUE, he is also linked to EPIS – Empresários pela Inclusão Social [Entrepreneurs for Social Inclusion, to BCSD Portugal – Conselho Empresarial para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável [Business Council for Sustainable Development] and to COTEC Portugal – Associação Empresarial para a Inovação [industrialists’ association focused on the promotion of innovation in Portugal].
He has participated in many congresses in Portugal and abroad, and has published over forty papers related to works in tunnels and dams, special foundations, instrumentation and geotechnical works and the use of geomembranes in underground and environmental hydraulic works.
