Biographical synopsis

Manuel Correia de Barros was born in Porto on 7 October and he died in the same city on 8 April 1991 at the age of 86. He graduated in Civil Engineering in 1929 and Electrical Engineering in 1933. 1930 saw the start of his lecturing career, as an Assistant. In 1942 he was appointed Second Assistant and in 1945, after concluding his doctorate, he became a Full Professor. His connection to the University lasted until 23 January 1975, the date of his retirement. Despite having started his career as a Civil Engineer and having lectured Rods and Railways, he mostly lectured Electrical Engineering related subjects, such as Measurements and Direct Current Machines, Electrochemistry and Alternate Current Machines. Between 1950 and 1961 he took on the position of Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and then resigned to become rector. He held various relevant positions by governmental appointment and by appointment of autonomous public bodies. The positions were in different areas, including his technical training area, as well as education, science and culture. Besides his technical knowledge, he was a polyglot and was very interested in cultural, humanity and religious issues. He became rector on 27 April 1961 by governmental appointment. That same year saw the process that led to the reinstatement of the Faculty of Arts (Humanities). Besides the Faculty of Arts, he also inaugurated the start of the Faculty of Economics on 1 March 1963. He retired from the position of rector, at his request, on 1 September 1969, after an eight-year long mandate, which had been carried out with the “highest competence, modal loyalty and absolute dedication”. Afterwards, he returned to the Faculty of Engineering and took on the position of President of the Portuguese Electrotechnical Commission. In 1970 he also became Head of the Electrical Engineering Workshop and the Electricity Office at the same Faculty. He was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Manuel Correia de Barros was chosen to be the Eminent Figure of U.Porto 2017.
