Biography of António Ferreira da Silva (1853-1923)

He studied Chemistry and Zoology at the Polytechnic Academy of Porto and Natural Philosophy at the University of Coimbra. He was awarded his PhD in Physics and Chemistry and in Pharmacy by the University of Porto.
He taught at the Polytechnic Academy of Porto and at the faculties of Medicine, Engineering, Pharmacy and Sciences, and was director of the latter and Vice-Rector of the U.Porto. He created and directed the Municipal Laboratory of Porto and the research services on the "chemical purity and lighting power of gas and lighting" of the Porto City Council.
