Luís José de Pina Guimarães was born in Lisbon on 24 August 1901.

After completing his preparatory medical studies at the University of Coimbra, he graduated in 1927 and obtained his doctorate in 1930, with a thesis entitled "Vimaranes" at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, where he worked.
At this Faculty, he was an assistant teacher of Anatomy (1927), auxiliary professor of Forensic Medicine, History of Medicine and Criminal Ethics (1931) and full professor of History of Medicine and Professional Ethics (1944).

He retired in 1971.

In addition to teaching duties, Luís de Pina served in many institutions. He was Prosecutor-member of the Centre for Demographic Studies of the National Institute of Statistics, member of the Board of Geographical Missions and Colonial Research, member of the National Committee for the History of Sciences, Vice-President of the Regional Board of the College of Physicians (1942-1944) and Ombudsman of Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto in the two-year period 1953-1955. For decades he directed the Institute of Criminology of Porto. He wholly supported the establishment of the Centre for Humanistic Studies of Porto, a cultural organisation which he chaired, and largely due to his dedication to historical studies, he was the first Director of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, between 1961 and 1966.

Fotografia de Estatuário religioso da autoria de Luís de Pina / Photo of Religious Statuary made by Luís de PinaAlong with other members of the Porto History and Arts circles, he organised in Porto the commemorations of the 600th anniversary since the death of Prince Henry, and presented many scientific works in national and international congresses. He wrote texts in the field on History of Medicine and of Professional Ethics, for example the chapter "Instituições de bemfazer e actividades culturais", in the History of the City of Porto, directed by Damião Peres and "A medicina portuense no século XV", published in the journal "Studium Generale" (special edition dedicated to Prince Henry, Volume VII, Porto, 1960) of the Centre for Humanistic Studies. He also produced drawings, caricatures and sculptures.

He founded and directed the Museum of the History of Medicine Maximiano Lemos of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, in m 1933, which he helped to transfer to the building of S. João Hospital, which also houses the Faculty of Medicine.

He was part of several Portuguese and foreign scientific societies and received many commendations. He was awarded the Medal of Honour of the city of Porto, and named Grand Officer of the Order of Christ, of the Order of Prince Henry, of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, Officer of Merit of the Italian Republic, and also Officer of the Scientific Order of Carlos Finlay.

In political life, he was a member of the Advisory Commission of the National Union, a representative member of Porto (1938-1945), member of the Administrative Commissi9on of the Porto City Council (1935-1937), Mayor of the Porto City Council (from 8 March 1945 to 8 November 1949), and Attorney of the Corporate Chamber (between 1945 and 1957).

Luís de Pina died in 1972.
