In the 50s, he lived in Vinhais and Santo Tirso.
In 1966, he graduated in Architecture at the Porto Higher Institute of Fine Arts and began working as a liberal architect in his own architecture workshop, which he converted into the company "Manuel Correia Fernandes, Arquitecto & Associados, Lda." in 1999. His business partners were the designer Ana Maria Tavares Cunha Fernandes, the economist Simão Cunha Fernandes and the architect André Cunha Fernandes.

Between 1969 and 1971, he worked as an architect while serving in the army in Angola.

At these schools, he was a member and the chairman of the Faculty Board, of the Academic and Teaching Standards Committee and of the Assembly of Representatives. He directed the Masters Course on Intervention Methodologies in Architectural Heritage, of the Faculty of Architecture - University of Porto, taught Masters Courses at the Faculties of Engineering and Economics, and was a member of the Senate of the U.Porto.

Manuel Correia Fernandes coordinated the Summer Courses of the Association of Universities of the North Region (AURN) and was a member of the Executive Committee of the Governing Board of "Sociedade Porto 2001" (until November 1999), in charge of the Programme for the Revitalization and Urban Requalification of Downtown Porto. He was a member of the Association and of the Portuguese Institute Architects [Ordem dos Arquitectos], and Chairman of the National Discipline Council of that institution.

Fotografia da Cooperativa de Aldoar, 1ª fase, Porto / Photo of Aldoar Cooperative, Phase 1, PortoAmong his many works, the following are noteworthy: the cooperative housing complex of Aldoar, which is formed by three housing cooperatives, built in three distinct periods, between 1979 and 1996, the Housing Cooperative Nova Ramalde, the Affordable Housing Cooperative of Ilhéu, in Campanhã, all located in Porto; and the housing complex of Telheiras, in Matosinhos.

Fotografia da Casa do escultor Carlos Barreira, Paredes / Photo of the house of sculptor Carlos Barreira, ParedesHe is a consultant and expert in public and private bodies and institutions, and has authored several projects published in books, newspapers and scientific journals, and collaborates on a regular basis with the daily press, namely with the newspaper "Jornal de Notícias".
He is also a frequent participant in conferences, debates and exhibitions, in both Portugal and abroad, and is a Socialist member councillor in the Porto City Council. He has received many commendations and distinctions, for example the "National Architecture Award" from the Association of Portuguese Architects, in 1987, and the title of Grand-Officer of the Order of Public Education, in 2005.

On 27 May 2010, as retired Full Professor, Manuel Correia Fernandes gave his last lecture, entitled "Viagem" [The journey] and held at the Fernando Távora Auditorium of FAUP. Attended by many students, colleagues and friends, for instance the Minister of Finances, Teixeira dos Santos, he described many of his travels and trips in Portugal and abroad that strongly influenced his training as an architect.
