Domingos Manuel Campelo Tavares was born in Ovar in 1939.
He studied Architecture at the Porto School of Fine Arts and has worked as an architect since 1971.
In 1973, one month after completing the degree, he became a teacher at the ESBAP. Throughout his career at this school, he taught Theory and History of Architecture, was a member of the Interim Committee of the Architecture course at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto and the Chairman of the Governing Board and the Scientific Board (1998-2006).
Domingos Tavares, a retired Full Professor, gave his last lecture at the Auditorium Fernando Távora of the Faculty of Architecture, University of Porto, on 4 March 2010.
At present, he is a member of the Advisory Board of the Department of Architecture of the University of Minho, Guest Professor of the Department of Architecture of the University of Coimbra. His privileged field of research is Theory of the Architectural Project.
Among his architectural work, the following are noteworthy: single house projects in Ovar (1967-1977), "Lar de Santiago", of the Misericórdia of Viana do Castelo (1977-1982), a housing complex in Esmoriz (1989-1992), the building of the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the University of Porto (1997), in collaboration with José Quintão and Lúcio Parente (of the Study Centre - FAUP), and the Library of the School of Engineering of the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra.
Domingos Tavares has written many books on architecture, such as: "Da rua Formosa à Firmeza" (ESBAP, 1985), "Miguel Ângelo: a aprendizagem da Arquitectura" (FAUP, 2002), and the collection entitled "Sebentas de História da Arquitectura Moderna", edited by Dafne (2003-2009).
As a leftist politician, he ran for National Parliament, for the Porto constituency, as a member of the CDU Party [Unitary Democratic Coalition], in 2009.
