Architect and lecturer

Rogério dos Santos Azevedo was born in Porto on 25 June 1898.

In 1912, at the age of 14, he began the Architecture course at the Porto School of Fine Arts, and completed it five years later. He would have to repeat it due to the reforms introduced in the education system.

After all these years of study, he obtained the Diploma in Architecture from the Porto School in Fine Arts, in 1926, and trained with architect Marques da Silva.

Paço dos Duques, GuimarãesDuring the 30's and 40's he taught Construction Design, Projections and Technologies, in technical education, in Porto and Viseu. He was a member of the Ethics Committee of the Porto City Hall (from 1935 to 1938); he ran the Porto delegation of the General Directorate for National Buildings and Monuments (1936 to 1940) and was also involved in the study and restoration of historical monuments. Some examples of this work are the reconstruction of the Monastery in Paço de Sousa and the house of Camilo Castelo Branco, in S. Miguel de Seide, Vila Nova de Famalicão. He was also the author of the works in the areas surrounding the castle of Guimarães (1939) and of the restoration works of the Paço dos Duques de Bragança, also in Guimarães (1942).

In 1940, Rogério dos Santos Azevedo was appointed President of the Regional North Department of the Architects' Association, and was hired to teach the 8th Subject – Architectural Drawing, Constructions and Health Conditions of Buildings – of the Porto School of Fine Arts, a subject which he taught until 1968. At this school, he also taught Architecture and Drawing of the Old Figure and the Live Model, and performed functions as Secretary and Librarian.

Garagem do Comércio do PortoAt the beginning of his career as an architect, Rogério dos Santos Azevedo signed projects considered to be modern in their time, such as the Garagem do Comércio do Porto (1932), the kindergarten building, open in 1934, and a private home, in Porto. He later abandoned this style and adopted a more traditional one, visible in the building O Comércio do Porto, in Aliados Avenue (1933), and a building in D. João IV Street (1934), both in Porto.

Hotel Infante Sagres, PortoStill along these lines, he is also the author of the primary schools in Centenários (1930-1933), the former building of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, in the Escola Médica Square, planned in collaboration with Baltazar de Castro and inaugurated in 1935, the pousadas of S. Gonçalo, in Marão, Santo António de Serém and S. Lourenço, in Serra da Estrela (1942-48) and the Palace Hotel in Póvoa de Varzim (1932). Other examples include: the Post-office building (1930), the Law courts (1936) and a School (1930), in Viana do Castelo; the SLAT building for the centre and north of Portugal (about 1930); the Maurício Rialto building, in D. João I Square (1941), the Infante Sagres Hotel (1945) and the housing complex in 898-954 Campo Alegre Street, in Porto.

Alongside his professional activities as an architect and teacher, Rogério dos Santos Azevedo always cherished Archaeology and Music, and even produced and published valuable documents and works in these two fields.

He died in 1983.
