Sofia Martins de Souza 1870-1960 Painter |
Sofia Martins de Sousa was born in the parish of Bonfim, in Porto, on 23 February 1870, and was baptized on 28 August in that same year and at the same place. She was the daughter of António Martins de Souza and Olinda Peres, and the sister of the famous painter Aurélia de Souza.
In 1885, she enrolled in the Porto Academy of Fine Arts, where she studied under the supervision of master Marques de Oliveira.
In 1898, together with her sister Aurélia de Sousa, and with the financial support of her niece Lucinda Augusta Dias Gaspar, she left for Paris to attend the École de Beaux Arts. Some of her teachers were masters Jean Paul Laurens (1838-1921) and Benjamim-Constant (1845-1902).
As a painter and designer, she mastered the oil and pastel techniques, with which she represented Inanimate Nature, Landscapes, Portraits and indoor scenes. She exhibited her work at the 13th Exhibition held at the National Society for Fine Arts, in Lisbon, in 1916, and in subsequent exhibitions organized by the Society.
In 1906, the sisters and artists Sofia and Aurélia de Souza donated to the Porto Academy of Fine Arts a set of paintings, sketches and drawings, most of which where done during her stay in Paris.
Sofia Martins de Souza died on 28 November 1960 at the Quinta da China, in the eastern part of Porto, at the age of 90.
