Igreja de S. Mamede de RibatuaLaureano Eduardo Pinto Guedes was born in S. Mamede de Ribatua, in the Douro council of Alijó, on 20 December 1938. He grew up in a culturally rich village much involved in music, theatre and the arts, where the ceramist and sculptor Joaquim Teixeira Lopes (Teixeira Lopes, the father) and sculptor Rodolfo do Couto were also born.
As a child, his education was marked by the strictness imposed by his father, a military who wanted him to follow in his footsteps, and the freedom given by his mother, who hoped he would be ordained priest.

At the age of eight, he settled with his family in Porto, but still maintained a strong tie to his hometown, even choosing the stage name Laureano Ribatua.
His father eventually accepted his artistic talent, especially after he asked his good friend Heitor Cramez to evaluate his son's sketches, which totally surprised him.

At the age of fourteen, he produced two oil paintings depicting the house of Teixeira Lopes and the Douro.
He studied Art at Soares dos Reis School.
In Porto, he contacted with the cultural centres in town: Tertúlia Aganipeniana, Youth Cultural Centre of the Clube Feniano Portuense, Ramalho Ortigão Cultural Centre and Ateneu Comercial do Porto.

In addition to the scholarship received from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, he was also awarded the following prizes during the course: "Legado Ventura Terra", "Congregação das 3 Artes", "1º Prémio de Desenho – Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra" [1st prize in Drawing], "Menção Honrosa de Escultura" [Honourable Mention in Sculpture]– Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra.

He was always an interested and participative student. Outside the school, he participated in the Magna Exhibitions, and in the Experimental Theatre of Porto (TEP]. He completed the degree in 1963 with a final mark of 19 out of 20.
Later, in 1969, he took the Pedagogical Sciences course at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto and was invited to teach at the ESBAP.

Baixo-relevo da Ponte da ArrábidaHe collaborated in Barata Feyo's workshop, working on the relief works for Arrábida Bridge, the statue of King João VI, in Porto, and then also worked with Lagoa Henriques on the monument to Calafates, in Foz do Douro.

He is one of the founders of Cooperativa Árvore.
In 1966, he met the sculptor Marino Marini in Rome, and in New York he contacted with teacher James Madroudis and Rosina Florio (1970).

Homenagem ao Homem do DouroIn that same year, he was invited by Pinto de Magalhães and Dr. Correia da Silva to be the Artistic Director of the Meadela Ceramic Factory (regional earthenware of Viana), in Viana do Castelo, and in 1989 he was challenged by Engineer Almeida dos Santos to assume the post of Artistic Director of the Douro Regional Ceramic Factory (regional ceramic work of Douro).

Besides sculpture, he was also dedicated to painting, architectural projects, artistic ceramic work, religious statues, medals, tapestry and theatrical productions.
