With the ultimate goal of defending consumers’ interests and giving continuity to the work already carried out on the comprehensibility of instructive texts (Guimarães, 2013), this study focuses on the analysis of the contribution of discourse markers (DM) to the comprehensibility1 of the information leaflets of a set of medicines both in European Portuguese and in German, in accordance with the Karlsruhe comprehensibility model (Göpferich, 2009). In addition to verifying the frequency of use of different types of DM in both languages, the article analyses their role in guiding readers’ expectations and facilitating their work in structuring the information they need to assimilate2. As this textual genre is so strongly regulated, both at national and international level3, it has been found that the textual producer/translator has considerable scope/margin to reinforce textual cohesion through the conscious and systematic use of DMs, and at the same time to improve its comprehensibility and to optimize the reader’s motivation for reading it.
