Resumo (PT): Encarando a noção de tradição como um processo dinâmico de constantes assimilações, o presente artigo incide na herança e papel actual da arquitectura popular em contextos pós-coloniais. Foca em São Tomé e Príncipe, apresentando alguns factores que marcaram a sua conformação territorial e socioeconómica, analisando possíveis influências do continente africano e das estratégias coloniais na arquitectura. Pretende-se assim compreender os mecanismos de apropriação e vivência do espaço, carências e informalidade, detectando desafios e potenciais para o desenvolvimento.

Abstract (EN): Understanding the notion of tradition as a dynamic process of constant assimilation, this paper focuses on the inheritance and current role of vernacular architecture in postcolonial contexts. Focusing on Sao Tome and Principe, it presents some factors that marked its territorial and socioeconomic conformation, analyzing possible influences of the African continent and colonial strategies in architecture. The aim is to understand the mechanisms of appropriation and experience of space, needs and informality, identifying their challenges and potential for development.
