Resumo (PT): Ao longo da história da Humanidade, a materialização das ideias e os registos necessários à vida em sociedade fizeram-se utilizando variadíssimos suportes físicos estabelecendo-se uma relação física e directa com o “objecto” documento e o acesso ao “escrito”. Todavia, no contexto da Era Digital este “colocar em algo de forma escrita” é indissociável da componente tecnológica. A relação com o documento sofre alterações nunca antes verificadas, a sua produção e uso passa a convocar múltiplas dimensões, a mediação tecnológica é incontornável para aceder à informação e à relativa resistência temporal dos suportes orgânicos sucede-se a extrema volatilidade dos suportes digitais, ou mais objectivamente, do complexo “ambiente/meio digital”. Abordar diacronicamente o processo histórico e informacional que se desenvolve em torno do mentefacto e do artefacto, analisar e sistematizar as formas de ver, pensar e agir em preservação e conservação ao longo do tempo, bem como aferir e compreender os posicionamentos, os problemas e os desafios suscitados pelo ambiente digital e consequente procura de soluções no âmbito da comummente designada preservação digital, constituem os principais objectivos deste trabalho de síntese, epistemológica e teoricamente alicerçado na área científica da Ciência da Informação.

Abstract (EN): Across Human History, the materialization of ideas and the records needed for the living in society were built using several physical media, leading to the establishment of a physical relationship between the “object” document and the access to the “written”. However, in the context of the Digital Era the act of “turning something into the written form” is impossible to dissociate from the technological component. The relationship with the document suffers changes never occured before, its production and use starts to appeal to multiple dimensions, the technological interface is totally necessary to access the information and, to the relative temporal resistance of the organic media succeeds the extreme volatility of the digital media, or, more precisely, of the complex “digital environment/medium”. To diachronically approach the historical and informational process which is developed around the mindfact and the artefact, to analyse and systematize the ways of see, think and act in preservation and conservation along time, as well as identify and understand the behaviours, the problems and the challenges generated by the digital environment and consequent search for solutions in the scope of the commonly designated digital preservation, constitute the main goals of this synthesis work, epistemologically and theoretically founded in the scientific area of Information Science.
